An Awkward Moment

So I’m dabbling with learning some German at the moment.

And trying to get through a textbook or two has taught me something – My technical knowledge of English is terrible.

There are so many grammatical terms or descriptions of sentence structure that go right over my head. Frankly, it’s a bit of a joke.

“Great. Why the H-E-double-hockey-stick are you mentioning this on a site where you claim to write things?” I hear you cry.

Three reasons:

  1. Look at the musicians who wrote masterpieces without being able to read or write sheet music. There’s a place for natural talent in this world, not just technical ability.
  2. Did you ever know someone who could fix a problem they didn’t know was there? Thought not.
  3. It’s writing. Writing by following all those rules makes it sound horrible and robotic. Bending and breaking those rules for your own ends just makes it sound more like an actual person wrote it. Because that’s how we all talk.
